GLP-1s (semaglutide/Ozempic/Wegovy) and GLP-1s + GIPs (tirzepatide/Mounjaro/Zepbound) are wonderful tools to reduce metabolic disease and shed excess weight if used properly and intentionally.

Metabolic disease is a cluster of conditions such as rising sugars, triglycerides, and central (abdominal) obesity that occur together. These conditions increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. I believe these medications save lives but can cause more issues and premature aging if used incorrectly.

Unfortunately, many are not using this medication properly. It is important to strength train and eat a balanced diet with an emphasis on protein and fiber to reduce muscle loss, improve metabolic rate, and aid in digestion. If lifestyle changes through diet and exercise are not established while taking this medication, the viscous cycle of weight loss and improved health is quickly followed by weight gain and metabolic risk with time or when stopping the medication.

While excess weight can affect mobility, so can muscle and bone loss, which can occur without adequate nutrition and exercise. We work hard for our muscle and lose it as we get older. It is crucial not to speed this process up!

GLPs can improve food noise/cravings and slow digestion. This can be beneficial for some, but for others can increase the risk for GI dysfunction (e.g. indigestion, nausea, vomiting, gas/bloating, and bowel change). Mental health changes should also be monitored while taking these injectables.

Modern medicine is a balancing act. It has the power to save and improve lives, but it can also cause more harm than good. Know your options, educate yourself, and ask questions. Medicine is not one size fits all.
